Commitment to Professionals

A Better Way Coalition is an advocate for change. In order to move from a death-denying to a life-affirming culture, it is important for people to have access to knowledge and resources about end-of-life care. This is particularly true for people who work in the wide variety of medical, in-home, long-term or hospice settings. Everyone has a role and can promote compassionate end-of-life care in Idaho. In support of professional caregivers the Coalition:

  • Compiles and makes available information on member, community and State end-of-life needs.

  • Fosters opportunities for professional dialogue on end-of-life issues, including a discussion board for Coalition members and electronic distribution list for information sharing.

  • Sponsors and maintains a Website that centralizes information on training and professional development opportunities, increases access to Idaho resources, and links users to national and international information on end-of-life issues.

  • Facilitates palliative end-of-life training for professionals.

  • Posts a Resource and Speakers Bureau.

  • Encourages and supports local end-of-life coalition building throughout Idaho.

  • Convenes ad hoc committees to research key end-of-life issues, such as advance care planning or pain management, and produces publications on key issues in Idaho including existing laws, common practices, and the ‘gold standard of care.’

  • Sponsors The Right Choice program that  provides up-to-date Idaho advance directive forms and materials to assist people in advance-care planning.

  • Circulates news releases and other media promotion to stimulate awareness of end-of-life issues and the valuable role of professionals in end-of-life care.

  • Educates on legislative bills and relevant policy matters.

  • Describes to the potential workforce the value and rewards of working within the end-of-life practice area.

  • Encourages professional membership and participation in end-of-life coalition activities.

Our members have expertise in all areas of end-of-life care and are available for speaking engagements on a variety of topics. Some potential topics are listed below. If your issue is not addressed, we can design a special program tailored to your needs.

1. Advance care planning: living wills, durable power of attorney for health care, long-term care,

    Medicare/Medicaid, and related issues.

2. Palliative care from the professional perspective.

3. Providing in-home and out-of-home care.

4. How to support informal caregivers.

5. Capturing a life story.

6. How hospice improves quality of life.

7. End-of-life ethical issues.

8. Spiritual care of dying people.

9. Coping with grief and loss.

10. Bereavement and complicated grief.

11. Choosing long-term care.

12. Community resources for end-of-life professionals.
