KBCI 2 - End-of-Life Registry Opens Jan 1

Beginning Jan. 1, 2007, Idahoans can register their advance directives-- which can include a living will and durable power of attorney-- with the secretary of state's office. Lawmakers passed a bill to provide this service earlier this year, in hopes it will help families and doctors deal with tough decisions that come toward the end of life.

Legislators quietly pass new law amid Schiavo controversy

The hand of death worked under a bright and broad spotlight last week.

On Thursday, the high-profile Florida medical-turned-ethical case of Terri Schiavo ended when Schiavo died two weeks after her feeding tube was removed. And on Saturday, Pope John Paul II passed away after battling several weeks worth of fevers and infections, and years of Parkinson's disease. While both demises were gripping the attention of the Treasure Valley, the Idaho State Legislature quietly-and unanimously-passed a bill aimed largely at preventing a Schiavo-type dilemma from happening here… [Read more]

The story entitled Idaho “Living Wills” Soon Easier to Understand was aired by at least 46 radio stations. Plus 37 stations took both sound bites and ran at least two versions of the story. These numbers are conservative since we know stories are commonly run 3-4 times on each station during the course of a day. The banner or story summary for this story is: Governor  Kempthorne has just signed a law to make end-of-life planning easier in Idaho, something more  people are talking about in light of the Terri Schiavo case in Florida. Comments from Cheryl  Simpson-Whitaker with A Better Way Coalition of Idaho.

You must talk to loved ones about life's end

The struggle surrounding Terri Schiavo would have been unnecessary had she completed a living will and durable power of attorney for health care. End of life can arrive slowly because of old age, come with complications of illness or sneak up like a thief in the night. No matter how or when death comes, you have a choice of the type of medical care you receive at life's end. Once seldom discussed, making one's wishes known about end-of-life care is now a topic of conversation for adults of all ages…[Read more]

Political arena is no place to debate life and death

The Terri Schiavo case brings to the foreground the unfortunate ethical dilemma experienced by family members or caretakers of terminally ill patients, or those in a persistent vegetative state, without an explicit directive by the patient. Unless we have walked in their shoes, we cannot truly be competent to make those choices without the help of trained professionals who have the expertise to guide us. And that precludes the political arena, where these complex issues dealing with life or death of an individual should never be played out…[Read more]

NASW Supports Advance Directives Improvement and Education Act of 2005

End-of-life and advance care planning essential

Washington — The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), representing more than 153,000 members nationwide, urges lawmakers to support Advance Directives Improvement and  Education Act of 2005 (S347 IS). This important piece of legislation allows Medicare recipients to consult their physician on end-of-life and advanced care planning. It provides reimbursement to physicians for time spent to have such a discussion. Additionally, the Department of Health and Human Services will receive funding for a public education campaign for all Americans to become informed about the importance of advanced directives… [Read more]

Better Way Coalition striving to offer more choices for patients
